Usui Reiki is one of the most widely practiced forms of Reiki healing in the world. Known for promoting relaxation, stress relief, and emotional balance, this gentle energy healing therapy originated in early 20th-century Japan.

Reiki was founded by Mikao Usui, who was born in 1865 in Japan. Usui spent many years exploring spiritual practices, meditation, and healing traditions. His studies included influences from Buddhism and Shinto, which helped shape the philosophy behind Reiki energy healing.

The most significant moment in the history of Reiki occurred in 1922 during a meditation retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto. According to Reiki tradition, Mikao Usui undertook a 21-day period of fasting and meditation. During this time he experienced a profound spiritual awakening that revealed a method for channeling universal life energy for healing. This discovery became the foundation of the Reiki system used by practitioners around the world today.

After his retreat, Usui returned to Tokyo where he opened a Reiki healing clinic and began teaching students.

How Reiki Spread to the West

After Usui passed away in 1926, his students continued teaching Reiki throughout Japan. One of the most influential Reiki teachers was Hawayo Takata. Takata learned Reiki in Japan before bringing the practice to Hawaii in the 1930s. From there, Reiki gradually spread across North America, Europe, and eventually the rest of the world.

Today Reiki is practiced in wellness centres, holistic therapy clinics, and increasingly within complementary healthcare settings.

Modern practitioners use Reiki to support:

  • Stress reduction

  • Emotional balance

  • Relaxation and wellbeing

  • Spiritual growth
